Cedar Lake Retreat

2017 - 2018

A dilapidated sauna on a secluded beach is rescued to become a private lakeside retreat. The building is turned inside out — the cedar interior is expanded across all walls and furniture, as well as onto the exterior decks, docks, shower, and siding. We challenged ourselves to eliminate the use of any plastics in this project. The remaining material palette is constrained to copper, glass, and cork. Baked cork insulation lines the ceiling, a big sliding window splits the structure to allow for light and view, copper doubles as an insect screen and details the roof, and lime paint is used to match the original sauna structure’s grey patina.
